چکیده

We investigate the evolution of clusters of galaxies in a sample of distant clusters with redshifts between 0.3 and 1.0. We show the abilities and limitations of combined ROSAT and ASCA data to draw cosmological conclusions. For the first time bolometric luminosities, masses, gas masses, gas mass fractions, and iron masses are derived in such a distant sample in a consistent way. We compare these quantities with the corresponding quantities in nearby samples. Furthermore, we analyse relations between these quantities and the gas temperature, metallicity and the morphological parameters and compare them with relations in nearby samples. Fits to all relations with power law functions are given. We find relations between X-ray luminosity, temperature, mass, gas mass, core radius and β, similar to those found in nearby clusters. Furthermore, we find gas mass fractions increasing with radius, with the effect being stronger in less massive clusters. Within errors we find no evidence for evolution in any of the quantities nor in any of the relations. These results favour a low Ω universe, but without strong constraints. We point out how promising the next generation of X-ray satellites XMM, CHANDRA and ASTRO-E are for cosmological studies with clusters. From the new observations primarily two measurements are required: detection of more distant clusters and measurements of the spectral and spatial parameters with much higher precision.

The Xxl Survey: v. Detection of the Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect of the Redshift 1.9 Galaxy Cluster Xlssu J021744.1−034536 with Carma

We report the detection of the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect of galaxy cluster XLSSU J021744.1−034536, using 30 GHz CARMA data. This cluster was discovered via its extended X-ray emission in the XMM-Newton Large Scale Structure survey, the precursor to the XXL survey. It has a photometrically determined redshift z = 1.91 −0.21, making it among the most distant clusters known, and nominally the...

The Radio Luminosity Function of the NEP Distant Cluster Radio Galaxies

A complete sample of 18 X-ray selected clusters of galaxies belonging to the ROSAT North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) survey has been observed with the Very Large Array at 1.4 GHz. These are the most distant clusters in the X-ray survey with redshift in the range 0.3 < z < 0.8. Seventy-nine radio sources are detected within half an Abell radius with an observed peak brightness > 0.17 mJy beam−1, except ...

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

The L x - T , L x - σ and σ - T relations for groups and clusters of galaxies

While in the hierarchical model of structure formation, groups of galaxies are believed to be the scaled-down version of clusters of galaxies, a similarity breaking in the fundamental laws may occur on the group scale, reflecting a transition between galaxy-dominated and intracluster medium dominated properties. In this paper, we present an extensive study of the relations between the X-ray lum...

The discovery of two distant, massive clusters of galaxies in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey

We discuss the radio, optical, and X-ray properties of two newly discovered, very X-ray luminous, distant clusters of galaxies. Both systems were noted as cluster candidates in a crosscorrelation of data from the WENSS radio survey and the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. Follow-up observations performed by us and the Massive Cluster Survey (MACS) team confirmed both sources as distant galaxy clusters. Th...
